Q13

by andrewgong01 Tue Nov 21, 2017 6:16 pm

For this question the proof window is the 4th paragraph and I think the author gives it away mainly in line 52 with "should" . However, I can not find support for A and struggle in seeing "D" as being soething the author does not support ( D is the correct answer)

A=?
B = can be ruled it based of line 59 that talks about integrating into local songs
C= No direct line reference (as far as I can tell) but it seems like this fits well in embedding cultural into the language learning
D=?
E= close to the reording of elders point raised on line 53 and in general it seems like author in P4 wants to have more cultural learning embedded (e.g. through folktales)

I chose "A" because talking about current events was stated in the previous paragraph and I thought P4 never brought up current events so that's why I chose "A"

I did not choose "D" because although it is true P4 does not want pedantic lessons on grammar "D" did say "idiomatic usage" , which could be a close math for to lines 51 on how we need to also teach people subtle meaning of words/contexts just like how idiomatic usage of words is not really taught. However, "D" was the credited response.

I would try to make a mental tally of the things the author did / didn't like in her programming:

DIDN'T LIKE
lessons
unengaging
distant from cultural context that give necessary/subtle meaning to words

DID LIKE
resonates with living oral traditions of indigenous communities
recordings of elders speaking the native language
mixed language word games
speeches by fluent speakers

(A) "speeches by fluent speakers" / "resonates with community" (fluent speakers address issues facing the community)

(B) "elders" / "speaking native language" / "resonates with traditions"

(C) "speeches by fluent speakers" / "elders"

(E) "recordings of previous decades" / "recited in indigenous language" / "the community's folk tales" (living oral traditions)

Meanwhile, (D) has "teaches the rules" (lessons) from the no-no list.

Yes, it mentions idiomatic usage, and the author is happy about "older people helping younger generations understand idiomatic language".

But TEACHING RULES about idioms sounds a lot more like those lessons that are "distant from the cultural contexts that give necessary and subtle meaning to the words".

another line as support for A:

"In fact, some communities have consciously founded native language radio stations as a means of simultaneously promoting their languages and keeping community members apprised of important issues.
