Like all RC analogy questions, we have to start by doing our best to come up with a short paraphrase or set of details we know from the passage.
What do we know about modern artists using old photographic techniques for artistic purposes?
We know that these old techniques have a huge chaos factor ... photos come out somewhat unpredictably imperfect (this is why these techniques were ultimately phased out ... photographers were seeking more perfection, more reliability).
However, these new school photographers are ATTRACTED to that unpredictability and imperfection. Plus, the new photographers like how hands-on the old techniques are.
So now we just have to think about this is more general terms, since the answer choices will use different topics.
We could look for things like
- attracted to unpredictable, possibly flawed, idiosyncratic results
- find the more labor intensive, hands-on process more intimate and appealing
(A) Don't see anything matching up here.
(B) This at least involves someone looking backwards to older techniques, but maybe 'in order to get inspiration for designing a high-rise building' isn't a great match. After all, these photographers aren't using old techniques to get inspired for taking modern, digital pictures.
(C) This is kinda tempting ... looking to the past instead of using computer-aided design (which could match up with modern digital photograph). What's kind of off-putting is that the old design is 'highly efficient', whereas the new photographers are specifically enjoying the highly IN-efficient and erratic nature of the old techniques.
(D) This looks solid ... old-fashioned techniques producing irregular results.
(E) Not terrible, but definitely worse than (D). This artist is not using an old tool or technique. Rather he is just using stylized figures from ancient paintings. It's almost like if modern photographers used 'costumes' they used to wear in older photos. We want the artist/designer to actually be using old tools.
If (D) didn't look good to you the first time, it probably has something to do with the fact that you weren't already seeking something that matched up with "unpredictable" / "idiosyncratic".
Make sure you're finding some line references to match up with the keywords of the question stem before you check out answers. We need to find keywords in the passage first so that we can recognize a match in an answer choice.
Where in the passage do they talk about the 'artistic purposes' of these retro-loving photographers?
There are several scattered line references here in the last two paragraphs.
27-28 "idiosyncratic is the source of their appeal"
33-35 "courting the very uncertainty that others sought to banish"
36-37 "embraces accident and idiosyncrasy"
41-45 "stains and imperfections ... Estabrook retains them"
46 "preoccupation with contingency"
48-49 "widely variable outcome"
Hope this helps.
