Q12 - Our computer experts are asked from time to time

by skapur777 Mon May 16, 2011 2:34 pm

Really annoying question. My understanding of the principle here is:

1. Certain people are asked to do certain things
2. They don't do it because they only want to do things that interest them
3. this affects people

C seemed closest here and thats why I picked it. But I don't think I really understood the principle here.

The principle here is more or less what you thought:

1. People have a responsibility to choose.
2. They tend to choose based on their personal interests
3. These choices don't serve the wider group in a certain manner.

(C) is similar: librarians have a responsibility to choose books, they choose ones that interest them, and these books don't serve the wider group in terms of their interests.

(A) doesn't have a clear statement that the decisions the executives are making is bad for the company.

(B) is tempting since the wider group is not served. But where is the personal interest?

(D) is lacking a wider group being harmed.

(E) is similarly lacking a clear statement of a group's interest not being served. It sets up a choice between two values.

Doesn't (b) still have a "personal interest" component? If the supermarket choose foods that can be sold for the most profit, couldn't this be interpreted as self-interest?

Good point. I bet you already smell the counter argument to this, though. It's not really a personal interest -- it's the interest of the supermarket, not some individuals choosing based on what "excites them" or "what they enjoy."

That do it for you?

To me, the graver mismatch for (B) seems to be that while most profitable investment directly serves the interest of the company, MOST healthful food does not directly translate into consumer's interest (e.g., what if this amounts to a much more expensive food??)

I'm failing to see where the "wider group" is addressed in this question.

The wider group in the stimulus is the company for which the computer experts work.

In (C), the wider group is the community.
