You do have to infer here, but it's a stretch to infer that photographic and journalistic records are "protest painting" because, mainly, they're not painting. In paragraph 3, we're told all about Bearden's work and how it reflects the realities of life in Harlem. Paragraph 4 (line 45) sums up how his work differed from simplistic journalism and photography. So (D) is supported by this.
(A) is unsupported.
(B) is problematic b/c of what you identified--this is referring to the comparison to protest painting, which is different.
(C) is unsupported. This is mentioned as a description of sociology at the time, which is actually mentioned as consistent with the journalism and photography.
(E) is the opposite of what we want.
