I was hesitating about (C); is it too strong? ("the central theme")
Thank you.

that's right -- we're given no indication that it is "the" central theme.

(D) fits in line better with the points the author makes -- Spanish authors don't question language, they are reluctant to try new forms, etc.

Would it be correct to chose (D) solely based on lines 30-34?
I wasn't sure if I fully incorporated the right reason for selecting D rather than a lucky guess between two answer.

C would be a great answer to an inference question, but this question here is asking us for something that is based on the passage, so we need concrete support. We find support fo D in lines 25-29, and later in 32-33. Tough question, but you have to focus on the question as well.
