Q10 - Principle: People should buy

by ying_yingjj Tue Mar 17, 2015 7:38 pm

I choose C.

Principle:
Should buy antique ---> 1. confident authenticity
and
2. desirable qualities
and
3. not just for invest
Application:
Matilde shoud not buy.

Contrapositive for the principle:
1. - confident authen.
or
2. - desirable qualities --------> should not buy
or
3. just for invest

Any 1, 2 or 3 can lead to "should not buy".

C states: Matilde suspects it will be highly desirable to other collectors (so that she can sell it for a higher value in future, meaning it has investment value).

Why C can not help conclude that she should not buy?

Great setup and question!

Many Principle-Example question give us a rule that says

X only if Y and Z.

The correct answer usually uses the contrapositive:
~Y or ~Z —> ~X
(this fools people looking for BOTH of the original criteria, since you only need ONE of these to trigger the contrapositive)

So you were clearly onto that part! Nice work.

The problem with (C) is that Matilde isn’t JUST desiring it for its investment value. She also desires it for its shape and color (intrinsic qualities).

=== other answers ===

again, we need to either hear
“CAN’T be confident about authenticity”
or
“buying it JUST for its investment value, not because it’s intrinsically desirable”

(A) nothing here ticks either of those boxes

(B) nothing here ticks either box

(C) tricky, almost sounds like the 2nd consideration, but she DOES find it intrinsically desirable

(D) nothing here ticks either box

(E) “the vase cannot be examined closely or authenticated over the Internet” ticks the box of “can’t be confident about authenticity”.

What is baffling for me about this question is where kind of logic is "can't authenticate it = can't be confident of its authenticity" . In what universe can we make a legit deduction like this?

Replying to above comment on why E does make sense and can be deducted from our info:
Logic follows as such:
Principle: If vase--value and confident of authenticity or desirable for intrinsic value
The conditions to be fulfilled are value and either of the two (authenticity or desirability for intrinsic value)
Application: requires contrapositive of Priciple.

E checks that box by making it not possible to authenticate and nixing unique value by mentioning it has been produced for "mass market." This contrapositive answer is one type of application that could come from this principle.

The other application would have been:
No value and not desirable for its features such as color/shape.
