Those choices are quite distinct:
(B) says "To understand R's work, we HAVE to look at his economic motives." (we cannot understand...without...)
(D) says "To understand R's work, we HAVE to look at OTHER STUFF besides financial motivations." (we cannot understand.. with only...)
(B) more accurately states the position of Alpers, not the position of the author. Look at the first and last sentences of the 3rd paragraph. Alpers says "Rembrandt was all about the benjamins," and the author says "that ain't right, yo!"
