Q1 - One reason swimming immediately after eating

by ohthatpatrick Tue Oct 29, 2019 4:45 pm

Question Type:
ID the Conclusion

Stimulus Breakdown:
Conclusion: There's no reason to believe swimming after eating causes muscle cramps.

Evidence: Cramps are caused by fatigue and dehydration, which have nothing to do with eating. And the theory that digestion reduces blood flow enough to cause muscle fatigue doesn't make sense because not enough blood is diverted for digestion to affect muscles.

Answer Anticipation:
We just need a paraphrase of the 2nd sentence.

Correct Answer:
C

Answer Choice Analysis:
(A) Too broad. It might be dangerous for other reasons. The author is only saying we don't need to worry about muscle cramps.

(B) The author never says this.

(C) YES, this matches the 2nd sentence.

(D) That could be a subsidiary conclusion, but the main one is related to swimming after eating.

(E) Same difference as (D).

Takeaway/Pattern: When we do ID the Conclusion we look for one really common pattern: The Conclusion will appear earlier in the paragraph than the Supporting idea(s).

This takes two specific forms:
1. Conclusion is the First Sentence
2. Conclusion is some statement of "I disagree", found after a "but/yet/however" type pivot.

This was a great example of the #2 form.
