Q1 - If a doctor gives a patient only

by stol1989 Sun Dec 08, 2013 2:01 am

Stimulus says:
Few options for patients -->more likely to adhere to the doctor's advice
Many options for patients --> less likely to adhere to the doctor's advice

Correct answer choice "C" says:
low number of alternatives --> people alter behavior more frequently
High number of alternatives --> people alter behavior less frequently

I can see how this AC almost restates stimulus but having trouble with matching "adhere to advice" with "alter behavior"

My thought is what if majority of people have a behavioral tendency to follow doctor's advice? Then, according to AC "C", they will change their behavior more frequently in presence of low number of alternatives, which goes contrary to the stimulus.

Please help :? !

Good question"”since the advice the doctor is giving the patient is for "lifestyle modification" we can equate the doctor's advice with a behavioral change. You're right that if we didn't know that the doctor was advising a CHANGE it'd be different"”maybe he'd advice not changing anything. But since we're told modification is needed, (C) matches in the way you described here.

Hope that helps!

(A) Confused? Giving more options doesn't mean confusion. They can get many clear options.
(B) Resulting benefits aren't mentioned, and they could possibly see a clear difference even when there are many alternatives.
(C) As Mary explained ^^^
(D) Vividly imagine the consequences of not following the advice? There is no hint to this and it can't be the principle of the argument. Besides, it's possible that there could be few options and they won't be able to imagine, while there could be many options and they will be able to.
(E) In getting good results? We aren't concerned with whether the patient actually gets better, only with whether they heed the modification advice. Also the clarity and accuracy aren't mentioned or hinted.
