1. (D)
Question Type: Synthesis (9-12, 19-20, 54-58)
When you’re asked to find the main idea of the passage, you will most often have to synthesize information found throughout the passage, in order to produce a general interpretation of the author’s intention. Choice (D) does that well here: from the first paragraph, we learn that injunctions are intended to safeguard proprietary information, and the following paragraphs give us reason to doubt that they are effective in doing so.
(A) may seem likely to be true, but it goes beyond what the passage tells us. The thrust of the passage is that injunctions do not adequately balance these objectives; we don’t have any candidates for better ways of solving this problem, though.
(B) is also not supported by the passage. The passage makes the case that injunctions are simply not a good tool for preserving trade secrets; we get no indication that strengthening them will improve the situation.
(C) states a supporting detail from the passage, and does so too strongly; we know that doing this is difficult, not impossible.
(E) also brings up a supporting detail from the first paragraphs and mischaracterizes it; we are told that injunctions may not adequately protect employee rights, not that they seriously erode such rights.
