PT 56, S2, Q13 - Heart attacks are most likely to occur

by bbirdwell Mon Nov 09, 2009 11:32 am

Question Type: Explain a Result
Heart attacks are most likely to occur on Mondays. Though it was once thought that this was related to work stress, new research shows that even unemployed retirees are more likely to have heart attacks on Mondays. This is the "unexpected" result typical of these question-types. The correct answer will tell us why unemployed retirees have heart attacks on Monday. (A) does exactly this by stating that retired people begin large projects on Mondays. It would be reasonable to infer that this contributes to the high frequency of heart attacks experienced by retirees on that particular day of the week.

(B) is wrong because the retirees mentioned in the original argument are unemployed. That many retirees are employed part-time does not apply to the unemployed retirees in the argument.
(C) is incorrect because it does not explain why Monday is the big day for heart attacks.
(D) is incorrect because it does not explain why Monday is the big day for heart attacks.
(E) is incorrect because it does not explain why Monday is the big day for heart attacks.
