Good question...
This one is tough, and it's semantics.
Fundamentally the reason why answer choice (A) is incorrect comes down to a single word - "will." It should have said "could."
We know the following things.
1. If a computer system is not varied, then a vandal who gains access to one computer automatically has access to all computers in the system.
2. The vandal can destroy all the data on all the computers, if the vandal has access to all the computers.
3. If the computer system is varied, then a vandal gaining access to one computer will not be able to gain access to all the computers in the system automatically.
4. Variations in computer systems can be created without any loss in connectivity from one computer to another.
We are asked to find an answer choice that can be inferred from the stimulus.
(A) is too strong. We know that if a business does not introduce variety into its computer operating systems, it could lose data on its computers because of damage from virus programs. But it may not be the case, because a vandal may not target their network. So, to say that they will lose that data would be inaccurate.
(B) is too strong. We know that if a computer virus program is introduced into a business' computer, all of the data on that computer could be destroyed. Also, we don't know that "all" of the data will be destroyed. Maybe just some of it would be.
(C) must be true. We know that it will have increased protection from the third statement above. Also, we know that not every computer will be protected from viral invasion, because such variations do not stop vandals from gaining access to a computer, but rather stop vandals from gaining access to all computers automatically.
(D) is not necessarily true. Having multiple, linked computer systems, does not protect against viruses, but rather variations in that system helps deny access to a vandal once the vandal has already gained access to one computer within the system.
(E) is not supported by the stimulus. In fact variations will make it more difficult for a vandal to access the data, and will not lead to a loss in computer connectivity. Not losing computer connectivity is not the same thing as it being easier to access data.
I hope this helps you see why answer choice (A) was inappropriate for an inference question. Let me know if you have any more questions on this one!
