Q16

D: is incorrect because it says use technology, and the passage suggests that under no circumstance (even if stringent restrictions are placed on technology to balance the use of it) is technology to be used as it relates to the environment? (line 57-58).

I see why the correct answer is E. E, "setting aside land to be maintained and protected from ext ration of natural resources" is directly supported by the notion that environmental influence is taboo, technology should be distant from environment, and wilderness is adored (last paragraph).

Nice work! I’ll put up a complete explanation since none has yet been written.

Before we look at answer choices, we should try to get a pre-phrase by re-reading the section of the psg. about FC’s equilibrium model.

We begin hearing about it in line 45. Some of the phrases I would latch onto are
"nature was most fruitful when least altered" line 48
and
"environmental interference was taboo, wilderness adored" lines 55-56

Okay, it sounds like in our correct answer we should see humans doing nothing and just letting Nature do its thing.

(A) Hmm, "introducing a species" sounds like interference.

(B) "taking corrective measures" sounds like interference.

(C) "using scientific methods" sounds like humans doing stuff, not nothing.

(D) "using technology" sounds like humans doing stuff. This answer choice uses "balancing" as well, which seems like trap language designed to entice people who are looking specifically for "equilibrium".

(E) Cool! This sounds the most like humans doing nothing and letting Nature do its thing.
