Passage Discussion

by wj097 Sat Sep 27, 2014 9:16 pm

I have a question about a part in the passage.

What exactly does the 3rd paragraph mean?
What does it have to do with the sub-topic "habituation"?

Thank you.

The third paragraph is saying we habituate but don't realize we're doing it. It's continuing the second paragraph.

So basically, we don't realize that we're going to habituate to new material possessions so we keep doing it, spending our money on it, when in reality, we end up bored and wanting more. Like, "I will be so happy when I buy this new dress!" and then you do, and you adjust to it, and you need another new dress.

That's all you need to take from that paragraph!

I have a question about the 1st paragraph of the PSG B.

The tone of the sentence in line 42-45 kind of threw me off and I misunderstood the 1st paragraph as the author agreeing with the primeval past explanation.

Is it correct that we only come to realize the author is against the the explanation in line 42-45 when we get to the 1st sentence of the 2nd paragraph?

Yes, we only know it once we get to the beginning of the 2nd paragraph.

However, I think we jaded LSAT people anticipate the author is going a different direction because the "perhaps" qualifier sounds like a concession to the other side or a "so their story goes ...." charitable reading of the opposing view.
