Passage Discussion

by hyewonkim89 Mon Aug 05, 2013 5:06 pm

Will someone confirm if my summary of the passage is correct?

P1 - Gluck admires the male dominated tradition rather than rejecting it

P2 - Gluck writes with the "great human subjects." No distinction between male and female

P3 - Critics of Gluck suggest to develop a new voice rather than remaining in a male-dominated tradition

P4 - Gluck claims difference between male and female will emerge. Literature contains its social and historical context.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Hye,

Your take on the first three paragraphs was great, but you missed the point on the last paragraph a bit. I'd say:

P4: Gluck believes insistence on female perspective is pointless, because all art speaks of its historical social and historical context.

Otherwise, great work!

I think that this passage is really Gluck v. Critics

1st paragraph we learn about Gluck and some background/ tradition

2nd paragraph now we learn the details about her poetry/work.

3rd paragraph now we learn about the critics and what they think, with the specific point being that she should create a female only poetry rather than trying to belong to the male dominant poetry that she has utilized.

4th now we hear glucks response and what she thinks.

Author is favoring Gluck but other than that appears neutral, you don't see any authors opinion in this passage. This is primarily a descriptive passage from the authors point. He just presents the two sides of the argument.
