Passage Discussion

by raymondcezar Mon Jan 14, 2013 11:33 pm

Hello,

I am having a difficult time deciphering what the scale is on this passage. I ended up getting two of its questions wrong, #22 and #28. However, I still feel like I didn’t fully understand the scale of this text.

If I were to narrow it down, one side of the scale would be that universities maximize ownership and profit participation, and the other side would be that intellectual property policies should be more financially favorable to faculty researchers.

Another idea would be that it is a one-sided scale, with the one side being: institutions should consider and appropriate levels of flexibility.

Let me know what you think. I appreciate your feedback and help.

Hey Raymond,

I wish I could be more helpful, but I actually think you nailed it on your first go-around. My scale for this passage would be exactly the same as yours:

One side: Universities maximize their financial benefit from faculty work

Other side: Faculty retain most/all of the benefit from their work

Author: Very difficult to place; overall, pretty objective/unbiased. More time is spent on the first side of the issue, but Patricia Chew, common law, and the study cited in the first paragraph are on the side of the faculty. Very little evidence is given in support of the university side.

I'd be happy to talk through the questions you got wrong, if you'd like to put postings on those two in the relevant spots here on the forums. I wish I could give you more, but I think you did a really good job with the scale!
