What does "secular" novel mean?
Is it opposite to "religious"?
The work is still novel right?
Religious in this passage mean to teach children and house work?

Yup, "secular" means "not-religious".

Religious in this passage means "grounded in the structures of Protestant belief". So Protestant refers to a type of Christianity, but they are talking about more of a worldview than simply a belief in Jesus. Within that worldview, you definitely have strongly defined family and gender roles.
