Great call on the two cases you mentioned.
I would say that I consider numerical distributions any time they haven't flat out told me the numerical distributions during the setup.
They Tell Us
ORDERING - f.e. 7 things, 7 spots. One thing per spot.
CLOSED GROUPING - f.e. 6 things, 3 groups. Two things per group.
If they haven't told me that all the characters go exactly once, I need to see if there's a min/max to how many times they each go.
If they haven't told me how many things go in each group, I need to think about if there's a min/max for how many things could be in a given group.
And when there don't seem to be many different possibilities, then it's worth writing out the numerical distributions.
WORTH IT:
4 groups, 7 people, min 1 / max 3
1 1 2 3
1 2 2 2
MAYBE WORTH IT
4 groups, 7 people, min 1
1 1 1 4
1 1 2 3
1 2 2 2
NOT WORTH IT
3 groups, 7 people, no min/max
