LG page 212 game set up

by MargaretY87 Mon Jul 16, 2018 3:11 pm

After diagramming the game for myself, I was not able to draw as many inferences as those provided in the solutions guide on page 214. However, the book does not go into the inferences made on the diagram in depth. Why does E have to go in slot one? Why is OK limited to slots 1 and 2? Why are slots 3 and 6 M/L? And why does slot 5 have to be N?

Thanks.

After the rules, our diagram has
...........i
__ __ __ J __ __

Since there can't be i's next to i's, we know that spots 2 and 4 must both be e's.
.......e...i...e
__ __ __ J __ __

Since M and L need to be exactly two spaces apart, they have to either fit into 2 and 5 or into 3 and 6. And then we also need somewhere to put the (OK) chunk, both of which are e's.

If we put M and L into spots 2 and 5, then we'd have spots 2, 4, and 5 taken, so there'd be spots 1, 3, and 6 still open. There's nowhere to put (OK)!

If we put M and L into spots 3 and 6, then we'd have spots 3, 4, and 6 taken, so there'd be spots 1, 2, and 5 still open. We would have to put (OK) into spots 1 and 2.

So we know it's
(O, K), M/L, J, __ , L/M

Who's the last character? N.

So it's
(O, K), M/L, J, N, L/M

and if we add what we know about i's and e's (including that both K and O are e's), we get
..e...e.....i.....e
(O, K), M/L, J, N, L/M

Hope this helps.
