How to properly execute readings?

Just like how the title says, how do you execute your advance readings? I've been doing mine lately and felt like I was doing less than I was doing more. Because I write down important details as I read and that's how it takes more time. Any suggestions how to do it efficiently? I would love to hear your different approach in advance reading.
