Hi!

I just wanted to report a typo...

On p. 350 Q2 - isn't the correct given diagram R -> -S?

It says R -> S in the book.

Please let me know if this is correct - and why - because I'm confused!

Hi Natalie, I'm looking at the 4th Edition Logical Reasoning Guide and it says on p350 Q2 that the correct notation is R --> ~S. I'm wondering if you're possibly working with a 3rd Edition Guide?

Hello

I recently got the LR Book. Its the 4th edition. On page 585 question 12. In the book choice B reads :
" a certain professional musician spends several times AS MANY HOURS practicing the guitar AS practicing saxophone"

From this i understand she spends the same amount of hours practicing both. Am i reading it right???
If it is comparing times vs hours how does this lead to more. If we dont know how many hours she practiced the saxophone. And within an hour she could have practiced several times more than the guitar. Please help ne understand this :)
I would really appreciate it!

Hi Ursula,

I'm reading this one a bit differently.

According to answer choice (B) the musician spends several times as many hours practicing guitar as practicing saxophone. So if the musician practices saxophone for 3 hours each week, then the musician spends 6 (or maybe even 9) hours practicing guitar each week.

Guitar = 2x (or maybe 3x) Saxophone

This argument is comparing how much time the musician spends practicing each, but since the multiplier is plural, we get the word "times." This does not refer to the number of practice sessions, but the ratio of time spent practicing each.

Hope that helps!

Yes I get it now! Thank you so much! If I wanted to use this again for example I would say:
Mrs X has several times as many students in her english class as she has in french class.
This would mean Mrs. X has more students in english class than in her french class.
Is this right?

Hello,
in the 4th Edition of the Logical Reasoning textbook, on page 550 in the answer key for question 12 (PT37, S2, Q12) in the break down of the answer explanation, it has the argument in the form of the "if/then" statements. On the first line it says "if good meals --> not made from bad food". On the second line it says "if good food --> not made from bad food" but in the actual question it says "Rosen: One cannot prepare a good meal from bad food, produce good food from bad soil..." So is that second translation correct? I'm so confused! H-E-L-P! :|

Thanks,
Leila

Hey Leila, great catch! You are correct, there's a typo in our arrow notations. The second one should say "good soil" rather than "NOT made from bad food." The four conditionals from PT37, S2, Q12 should read as follows:

Good Meal --> Good Food
Good Food --> Good Soil
Good Soil --> Good Farming
Good Farming --> Value Natural Resources

Hope that helps!

Page 32 (also comes up in future references) — the diagram to #4 PT7, S4, Q13 draws a conclusion about house fires, whereas the original statement draws a conclusion about early detection. Looks like there’s an additional inference about early detection and house fires in your diagram.
