Burn out...?? Cannot concentrate on study...

by tzyc Wed Jun 12, 2013 7:10 am

Hi, I have a serious issue...
I cannot concentrate on study these days for some reason...
Maybe because I could not study for a while (since I was busy for other things and couldn't study as before...) or maybe because I could not increase scores as I think, so feel anxious and not sure whether I should change my study method and how to change it...
I realized I'm escaping (?) from reality... :|
I thought maybe if I take a break (watch movie etc) and come back I can focus on study, but even it already passed 2-3 weeks I still cannot focus...
Could anyone provide any tips for this situation??
The score drops a few points too...
Thank you.

Hey tz_strawberry,

It's not all that surprising that you're experiencing burnout. There are probably several factors hitting you all at the same time; school is out for most people, the summer is here, the next LSAT administration is still quite far away, and you can think of other fun things to go do.

That said, if you're determined to get to your LSAT prep, do it with purpose. Don't think about the amount of time you want to study for, but think about the objective for the morning or for that day. Come up with a goal - a specific topic you'd like to cover and dive deep.

Lets say you take on Necessary Assumptions for the day, would knowing just the question type give you any tips about what you expect to see in the stimulus? What other question types have similar qualities? What about the answer choices? What expectations do you have and with frequency?

Make a list of patterns you expect to see and then sort the questions you work into those patterns when you see them. Study with purpose and you can avoid burnout.

Good luck!

Hi, thank you for your reply!
I'm trying to have purpose for study everyday, but sometimes I cannot finish the work I decided to do within the day...and push them to the next day :|
Even the amount of the study is less than the amount I did before...
I feel I lost a lot of time (for studying) and that makes me feel upset too. :|
But I guess maybe I just need to increase the amount little by little?

Sure, if that works for you; increase the amount of time you study little by little. Remember, the amount of time you spend studying, is less important than the quality of your effort.

Take on tasks you know you can accomplish within the day or give yourself longer for tasks you know are going to be a process. Remember, a lot of your prep is about attaining mastery of execution. This is like learning a new language. You can't just sit down and read a list of verbs and conjugations and expect that tomorrow you'll be able to use them effectively while conversing in the language--it takes time, experience, and repetition.

Thank you very much for your reply.
You are right, I think I need to endure my current situation and continue to study...hopefully the result will come later.
I feel better now, thank you! :)
