Before and After

by ephraimae Tue Jul 02, 2013 10:42 pm

Every time I am given a split block rule such as the following: R is exactly two spaces ahead T. I am unsure how to diagram the rule in the sense that I wonder there is only one space between the elements or two. what is the best way to figure this out?

Ask yourself whether the number is about the spaces between the two elements are the distance one element is from another. For example:

H is separated from R be exactly two slots.
Exactly two slots separate H and R.
There are two slots between H and R.

all mean....

H __ __ R or R __ __ H

H is assigned to the second slot after R.
H is assigned to the slot following the slot after R.
R is assigned to the second slot preceding H.

all mean...

R __ H

Hope that helps!
