Assumption Questions

by ayfernandez Tue Jul 23, 2013 7:15 pm

Hi guys,

I just did the Drill section of Assumption Questions (Logical Reasoning Strategy Guide, 3rd Ed.)

I had difficulty figuring out what my task is with these three questions: "Which one of the following is a QUESTIONABLE ASSUMPTION on which the argument relies?" (p. 114), "The argument assumes that" (p.112), and "Each of the following is an assumption required by the argument EXCEPT:" (p. 117)

Thanks!

"Which one of the following is a QUESTIONABLE ASSUMPTION on which the argument relies?"
-- This is an "ID Flaw" question type

"The argument assumes that"
-- Most likely a "necessary assumption" question type

"Each of the following is an assumption required by the argument EXCEPT:"
-- "Necessary assumption, except" question type

I actually thought QUESTIONABLE Assumption is an Assumption question as it was given within the Assumption Drills of the LR Strategy Guide.

Thanks for that!

Dont fall into the trap of over categorizing question types... at some point u should start seeing the similarities between question types.

E.g., ID flaw is a necc/suff assumption question asked in a different way.

Strengthen/weaken questions share something in common etc.

Good discussion so far you guys! Chike is right that all questions in the assumption family work very similarly and that it's a good idea to see the similarities.

Where they differ is in the "themes" we see in the stimulus (ex: conditional logic in Sufficient Assumption, causation in Strengthen and Weaken questions, etc.) and in the way that tempting but incorrect answers are formulated (ex: Necessary Assumptions have wrong answers that are sometimes too strong, Strengthen and Weaken questions sometimes have answer choices that are too weak, etc.).

Finally to ayfernandez's question, all three of those questions were asking for the Necessary Assumption made in the argument. Hope that helps!
