2125 Someone please explain

by bigkneescheese Tue Dec 23, 2014 7:37 am

Of the 100 members of the Pacific Club, 70 play team sports and 50 play individual sports.

We can infer that…

A.) At least 20 athletes play both team and individual sports.

B.)At most 20 athletes play both team and individual sports.

The correct answer is A.

Hey big knees,

Think about it this way:

If only 19 people played both, then we would have a problem, because that would mean there were

19 people doing both
51 people just doing team
and 31 doing just individual

That adds up to 101 people. But there are only 100 people.

But there COULD be 21 people doing both:

21 people doing both
49 people doing just team
29 people doing just individual

That adds up to 99 people. Now, if you're wondering "What about that 100th person?" remember that the prompt never says everyone has to take part in one of these activities, so that extra person could be doing NO sports.

Hope that helps!
