Women who undergo premature menopause are at slightly increased risk for heart disease, but taking hormone supplements to stave off menopause increases the risk for breast cancer. Women should not take hormone supplements to stave off early menopause.

Which of the following is mentioned as an opposing point to the main conclusion?

A) Women should take hormone supplements to stave off early menopause.

B) A particular disease, premature menopause, causes a higher incidence of heart disease.

---------------------------------------------

The correct answer is B. How does that statement, or the first sentence, oppose the conclusion?

Also, is A wrong because it is not mentioned (directly) in the stimulus? I thought A was correct because it is the opposite of the conclusion -- without the word "not."

Thanks.

Hey Ptraye,

Well do me a favor, for practice here. Please write out what you see as the conclusion and the premise (i.e. the CORE) of this argument.

After answering more problems and coming back to this one, I see my mistakes.

For practice, the core is below:
---------------------------------------------

Women who undergo premature menopause are at slightly increased risk for heart disease, but taking hormone supplements to stave off menopause increases the risk for breast cancer. Women should not take hormone supplements to stave off early menopause.

P: Women who undergo premature menopause are at slightly increased risk for heart disease
OP: taking hormone supplements to stave off menopause increases the risk for breast cancer
C: Women should not take hormone supplements to stave off early menopause.

Cool! Usually, writing out the core directly will help you avoid confusions like this one.
