Verbal Section Time management Problem

by adarsh.olbusiness Fri Jun 28, 2013 3:01 am

Hi,

English is been my foes since 9th grade and it seems like gre is bringing my worst nightmares a reality . Still I have managing my CAT's in verbal to 145+ in 2 month prep . I want to go further to 160+ in verbal .

1) Having problem in time management in RC's ; using MGRE's method of writing and solving gives fair accuracy but takes too much time.
2) Gone through most of vocabulary material available but getting 60% accuracy in SC & TC section .

Above all ETS powerprep 2 verbal section seems very daunting .

Please help me figure out where i going wrong and what i need to do to improve.

Thanks in Advance .

Hey Adarsh,

Well, being totally honest with you, the English in just that post was very problematic. My serious opinion is that your fundamental English is still lacking, and this will get in the way of your getting the score you need.

You mentioned that our method is good but too time-consuming; that's because you are simply reading too slowly. Unfortunately, that method of ours is what you must do. There's no trick to it. So if you don't have time to do that, you have to speed up your reading and your comprehension to the extent that you can.

Vocabulary is easier; you simply have to learn more words. However, if the context of the sentence is giving you troubles, then that can be traced back to the other issue.

I wish I had better news, and I'm only basing this off one post, but that would be my honest assessment. Good luck!

I have been reading english books, listening to english songs ,and watching english movies for around fifteen years . I have passed my english exam with 70+ grades and i never across this problem before . Maybe whenever i am trying to decorate my sentences with "GRE" vocabulary i am making those mistakes or may be i want to live in denial.

I think above is enough material to analyze where my english fundamentals stand .If you still think they are weak please suggest some reference materials i can use for improvement .

Hey Adarsh,

Hi,

English is been [this should be "has been," because it's the present perfect tense] my foes [this should be singular "foe"] since 9th grade and it seems like gre is bringing my worst nightmares a reality [This is not idiomatically correct. It would be "The GRE is making my worst nightmares a reality," though it's still iffy from a meaning perspective.]. Still I have managing ["have managing" is not any kind of correct verb tense; "have managed" would be present perfect, but it would be incorrectly used; you don't "manage" a CAT] my CAT's in verbal to 145+ in 2 month prep [you mean "two months of prep"]. I want to go further to 160+ in verbal [you either want to go further or go to 160+, to say both is redundant].

So that's a very short parsing of your paragraph. Now I do understand we all write lazily when posting online, but there are errors here that are dangerous/worrying. I can't speak to your English outside of these posts.

As for resources, I'm not an English teacher, so I can't say anything interesting. The safest bet would probably be a private tutor to edit your writing and then teach you the correct replacements.

Good luck!

P.S. I could still be wrong, by the way; you'll have to use your own gut feelings in working out what's going on. : )
