vague US population graph in quant of first practice test

by av.kierulf Fri Mar 11, 2016 11:11 pm

I took powerprep last week and got 163 quant. I took the first manhattan prep practice test today and got 160. I missed 3 math questions (Increase by group, old and unemployed, and median female age) because it was unclear from the graph which lines were referring to 2000 and which for 2009. Did anyone else have the same problem and can manhattan prep fix this? The graph itself is unclear.

Also, any suggestions on how I can push to 165+? I find from the last 2 powerprep tests I took that I make some silly arithmetic mistakes, which lowers my score by 2 points. Every time I answer 20 consecutive math problems in the 5-lb book, I always make at least 1 clumsy mistake. Is this just me? I'm scheduled to take the GRE in one month.

Hey AV,

I've looked at that chart many times. It's not easy, but it's not meant to be easy, and it is inherently clear which line is which. If you look at the STARTING point of the chart on the left, you can see there is GREY beneath the top line. That means this line is definitively the 2009 line, and you can follow it from there.

As to your second point, there's no easy answer to the question "How can I improve?". That's what our classes and books and private tutoring sessions are for! :)

Thanks tommy! I'm working on the math problems in the 5-lb book atm. Btw, are the manhattan practice exams slightly harder in math but easier in verbal? When I took the ETS practice tests, I scored higher in math than verbal, but in the manhattan tests, I score higher in verbal than math.

Hey Av,

You know, I've heard every variation on this. Some people think X is harder. Some people think Y is harder. I think most test prep companies attempt to make things just a teensy bit harder than the real stuff, because we know that the main things students do not want is for their practice tests to be easier than the real thing. But we really do aim to make things as realistic as possible!
