Using GMAT books to prep for GRE

by epmarquis Tue Dec 29, 2015 4:10 pm

Hello. I read on the Manhattan Prep website that I can use GMAT books to prep for the verbal portion of the GRE. The website states I can use the entire Reading Comprehension book but should focus on portions of the Critical Reasoning book. The topics listed to focus on in the Critical Reasoning book are Describe the Role/Analyze the Argument Structure, Strengthen and Weaken, Explain a Discrepancy and Inference. Which chapters are those in the GMAT Critical Reasoning 5th Edition book?

Thanks

Not sure I understand the question. You should study the chapters with those names! Or if the chapters don't have names anymore (though I'm pretty sure they do), then read the chapters that test those question types, which should be made clear on the first page of any given chapter.

Hi. I am trying to use the GMAT critical reasoning book to prepare for the GRE. I read on the website to focus on the chapters named:
1) Describe the Role/Analyze the Argument Structure
2) Strengthen and Weaken
3)Explain a Discrepancy and Inference.

The chapters in the GMAT book do not have those names. The names of the chapters in the GMAT book are
1) Argument Structure
2) Methodolgy
3) Struture- Based Family
4) Assumptions
5) Strengthen and Weaken
6) Evidence Family
7) Complete the Argument
8) Wrong Answer Analysis.

I am not able to figure it out from the descriptions at the beginning of the chapters. Can you list which of the eight chapters in the GMAT book I need to focus on to best prepare for the GRE?

Thanks

Aha!

Well, you might just wanna pick up a GRE book and save yourself the confusion. HOWEVER, I do have an answer:

1) Describe the Role/Analyze the Argument Structure - Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of GMAT book
2) Strengthen and Weaken - Chapter 5 (obviously)
3)Explain a Discrepancy and Inference (Chapter 6: you'll see both of these question types mentioned by name within the evidence family; Chapter 7 (whatever fill in the blank questions that are inference OR strengthen/weaken).

Good luck!

Thank you very much! Do you think it will make a difference whether I use the GMAT or GRE book? Is there something more than formulas the GRE math book will offer over the GMAT does not? My plan was to use the GMAT books to learn formula then a GRE practice test book for question strategy.

Is there a particular book you would recommend? I have the full GMAT prep book set and am trying to avoid repurchasing a full GRE set.

Thanks

The most important GRE book would be the QC/DI book, because those question types don't appear on the GMAT (DI is a bit like the IR section, though). Otherwise, the math is the same. Keep in mind, however, that in a general sense, the GRE is easier math than the GMAT, but the algorithm is less forgiving of mistakes.

Good luck!
