Surface Area - Length, Width, Height

by marcscz Fri Mar 13, 2015 10:56 am

In the Geometry guide, chapter 4, problem set question # 4.

How do you know which dimension is which?

The book mentions length & width doesn't matter in a 2-D figure, but how about in a 3-D figure?

I think the standard convention is Length x Width x Height.

Hey Marc,

It still shouldn't matter though. I've never seen a question where there's a need to specify which is called which.

Hey Tommy,

You are right. I re-worked the problem doing all possible combinations and it came out the same.

Sorry, I must have made a miscalculation the first time I attempted the problem. I just need to be more careful.

The more I think about, it shouldn't matter just by common sense. No matter which way the tank is turned, it doesn't change the area. Still the same tank.

That's deep stuff. No matter how you look at it, it's still the same tank. The tank is like life that way...
