RC Help!!!!

by shcoolj Fri Sep 07, 2012 1:55 am

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me out with an issue I seem to be having. I've done all the Manhattan Tests and have got an average of 324, but I'm hoping and praying for a 330+ score and have my GRE this month. Apparently my weakest area is the RC portion where my average across all the tests is 60%. I have been reading articles in The Economist, etc. over the last couple of weeks, but I honestly and am not improving at all on this one portion of the test. What do you reckon I should do to sort this out? Cheers!

Have you been studying from the Manhattan GRE RC book? It is pretty good at identifying all of the different question types, as well as all the different types of wrong answers. I would suggest you look at the questions you got wrong on your practice tests and see which types of wrong answer types you fall for. When you take future practice tests (and eventually the actual GRE) make sure the answers you choose don't fall into those wrong answer categories. If you haven't gotten it already, I suggest the kindle edition, which is cheaper and you can read online from any computer connected to the internet. And practice, practice, practice!

I just took my GRE and found that the Manhattan GRE practice tests were significantly harder that the real thing. (I got a pretty darn good score too, so its not because I got easy adapted sections.) You will probably score a few points higher in your combined score when you take the real thing as long as nerves/the flu/heartbreak or whatever don't get the best of you. (Knock on wood.) Good luck!

Hey Shcoolj,

Good advice from cocoshin. The issue of difficulty is a tough one. I'm teaching a private student now who swears our tests are really easy relative to the real one, while other people find the exact opposite is true. I do think that you will do many questions on the edge of the hardest the GRE has to offer if you go through our entire curriculum, but I like to think our tests do a pretty good job simulating the true difficult of the GRE.

As far as RC goes, it's always hard to say in a very simple way how to improve at an entire section. Basically, as cocoshin says, you should just do a lot of questions and focus on the ones you get wrong. ALSO, try to change up your process. If you're not taking any notes, even though the books recommend you try taking notes, that would be an explanation for your lack of improvement. Change the way you go about/think about questions, instead of just hoping that enough different questions will magically make you better at them. The key is always switching up the process!
