Quick way to solve?

by p_gorsky Mon Oct 28, 2013 11:51 am

3/5 + 6/10 + 9/15 + 12/20 + 18/30
all divided by
5

Answer choices:
3/20
3/5
4/5
12/5
5

Is there a specific way I should be looking at to solve this? It seems like there would be a short cut to avoid a long, drawn-out method to finding the solution.

Hey Gorsky,

Yep! There is!

Each of these fractions simplifies to 3/5.

There are 5 of them, which means adding them up is the same as multiplying by 5: 3/5 * 5

The question asks us to divide that by 5, so we're just back at 3/5.

Tada!
