Probabilities: When order matters/doesn't matter

by Jmoustafa345 Mon Apr 06, 2015 8:00 pm

I just want to make sure I'm understanding this correctly:

-If the question were to find the probability of flipping a die on an even number AND an odd number, then order doesn't matter. The answer would be the probability of EO or of OE, so 1/2(1/2) + 1/2(1/2) = 1/2.

-If the question were to find the probability of flipping a die on an even number AND THEN on an odd number, then order matters. The answer would then be 1/2 x 1/2 = 1/4.

Is that right?

Exactly right, Jehan! The question will always give some signal if order is to matter (in this case, the phrase "and then").
