Practice with calculator

by katielinhart Wed Sep 12, 2012 10:02 pm

I just downloaded my first e-book and it references a way to learn how to use the calulator as well as some practice exercises. I have dug all over the site and can not find it!

The practice tests on this site are awesome. I had a hard time finding them at first, too. There should definitely be a big ol' button right after you log in for accessing the practice exams.

Anyway, to get to them click on the tab along the top control bar that says "Student Center". If you aren't already on the sub tab that says "Practice Exams", click on it. Then scroll down and below the rectangle that says "Your MST Exams" there is a link that says something like "Start new exam". When you click it, it will open a new window that will start a new exam in the GRE format.

Once you are taking the test, there is a button at the top with a little calculator on it which will open up the calculator for all your calculating needs. You can drag it around the screen if it's blocking part of your question. It's the same when you take the actual GRE. Hope this helps!

Once again, great advice from Cocoshin. We should get you on the payroll! : )

One thing I always like to add about the calculator. DO NOT become overly dependent on it. The GRE very rarely requires the calculator. It occasionally makes a question go a little bit faster, but the vast majority of questions can be done with simple math in your head, and usually you are overcomplicating things if you get out the calculator.

In other words, if you struggle with "simple arithmetic" (what's 4 * 13?), you should work on being able to do that kind of thing in your head (there are plenty of drill books out there), so you don't need click the button, enter the numbers, etc.

Hope that helps!

How can I raise numbers to an exponent on this calculator? I could use a quick refresher. Thanks!

Hey Rebecca,

The GRE calculator doesn't have that ability. Just multiplication, divison, addition, and subtraction! Oh, and square rooting!
