Practice test 6 question 3

by domivantman Fri Nov 06, 2015 12:46 pm

Hi,
I am a bit confused with the question Pie or Square, because:
The shaded area is 3/4 x Pi x r^2
The square area is 4 x r^2
So the difference between the square and the shaded are is 4 x r^2 - ( 3/4 x Pi x r^2) = (16 x r^2 - 3 x Pi x r^2)/4 and this is equal (aprox) to (6.57 x r^2)/4
So if r=1 Shaded region is greater
if r=2 the unshaded part is greater.
So the answer should be D!

Please Help!

Thanks

Domi

Hey Domivant,

The shaded area is 1/3 of the circle, not 3/4. 120 degrees is 1/3 of 360.

Hello there!! While I understand their explanation for this question, I am wondering how can you know 120 is a central angle and those are actually radii to apply the proportion rule? The question does not state that, but maybe I am missing something here....

Thanks a lot!!

I agree with you on that. We should make it clearer that that's a central angle. Good call.
