Guide 7. Ch 4th ed. P 132. Passage F Sweet Spot. Q1.

by tavocp Thu Sep 17, 2015 10:01 am

Hi.
For question 1 option E is given as the correct answer however based on the passage information i believe this is incorrect.

The passage says "many players strive to hit the ball on the raquet vibration node, more commonly known as the sweet spot ... a second lesser known location ... will also diminish strain". It later says "if a ball were to strike this point, the impact would not impart any motion to the end of the handle".

The passage notes the existan of 2 different points, the first reduces vibration (vibration node) while the second reduces rotation about the contact point. Option E is wrong because the center of pecussion does not dampens vibration instead it reduces rotation and it's effecthe I the players hand. Vibration and rotation forces are different things, something can rotate without vibration and vice-vers. This is precisely the difference between them, one reduces vibration while the other reduces something else.

Let me know if I am missing something.

Thanks, Gustavo.

Hey Gustavo,

Hmm. I think you make a good point. That said, I also think that the other sweet spot, in keeping the racket from "jerking" (the language used in the passage), would also dampen vibration, by nature of its primary effect. I don't see a way that a racquet could "jerk" forward or backward and not have some vibration as a result. However, I agree that (A) is less than clear. I'll see what our curriculum folks think, and if they agree with you, we could change it up in future editions.

Thanks!

Hi,

I am posting in this topic only as I have a doubt in this particular RC passage (Reading comprehension Guide 7, Chapter 8 Problem set, passage F).

In question 7, Ans C is also regarded as a right answer. But I am not sure that anywhere in the passage it is mentioned that the second sweet spot will allow a cleaner stroke than the primary sweet spot.
Please help me understand what I am missing here.

Thanks

Actually, the passage says that almost word for word:

"When the player strikes the ball at the center of percussion, her wrist is jerked neither forward nor backward, and she experiences a relatively smooth, comfortable tennis stroke."
