Powerprep 2 Test 2,Section 3,Q5.

by hasibul212003 Mon Nov 24, 2014 2:42 am

In the (x,y) plane (1,2) is on line j and (2,1) is on line k. Each of the lines have a positive slope.
Quant A Quant B
Slope of line j slope of line k
Why is the Ans D. Drawing the figure indicates line j should have a steeper slope than line k.

case 1:

point (1,2) on line J
point (2,1) on line K

both positive slopes (so both the lines must pass through quadrant 1 and 3)

If we extend it up and down in it's place itself. Line J will have greater slope (since it is more steep compared to Line K)

A>B

Case 2:

Keep line K as it is
Imagine the line J at an approx angle say 30 degree going from quadrant 3 to quadrant 1 and passing through the point (1,2)

In this case line K becomes more steep and has greater slope

So B > A

hence D

Great explanation here.

Just to be clear, remember that all you have is one point. You can draw a line with LITERALLY any positive slope that will go through one point. It's only when you have TWO points that the slope is defined already.

I didn't get this line:-Imagine the line J at an approx angle say 30 degree going from quadrant 3 to quadrant 1 and passing through the point (1,2)

In case 1 : slope of line J was greater as compared to slope of line K

we need to contradict the above answer to prove "D"

To make slope of line J less than slope of line K -> we have to make line J less steep

Consider this (just an approximation)

I didn't get this line:-Imagine the line J at an approx angle say 30 degree going from quadrant 3 to quadrant 1 and passing through the point (1,2)

Line J passing through points (-7,3) and (1,2) - steepness decreases (almost falling down position) - in such a case slope of line K is greater

hence D

Hey Kp,

Yeah, in general, when all else fails, ignore the explanation in the book and try to understand my/Noob's explanations. I think we do a better job! :D

Does it not make sense that you can draw ANY line that only goes through one point? It can have any slope whatsoever...
