Issue: A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college

In my opinion, a nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum until they enter college. A national curriculum levels the playing field for students preparing for college, it also helps teachers because they would all be teaching the same material; effectively eliminating the need for prep time. Parents would also have some peace of mind because they would know exactly what their children are learning, and they would know that every other child in the nation is learning the exact same thing. A nation-wide curriculum would benefit everyone involved in the learning process.

With a national curriculum students would all be studying the same material at the same time. No student would have an advantage over another in terms of the speed and the material that they are learning. This is a definite advantage because some students who come from a wealthy background have the opportunity to go to top notch private schools where they are taught a rigorous curriculum throughout the year. Whereas a student from a lower class background would not have the same opportunity to go to a nice private school and receive the same education. This puts the lower class student at a disadvantage from the private school student, and when college admissions are looking at the two students resumes, they will undoubtedly choose the student with the more rigorous educational background. Having a national curriculum would make this problem obsolete. College admissions would now have to base their decision off the students grades and standardized test scores since the curriculum of every student applying to college would be the same.

A national curriculum would also make life easier on the teachers at these schools. If every teacher is required to teach the same material at the same time, their prep work for the year would be non-existent. They will have more time to spend on break if they do not have to come in to school 2 weeks early to prep their material for the entire year. It also makes moving an easier task. If a teacher has to move to a different state, for example, it would not be that big of a deal because he/she could start at their new school in the same exact place where he/she left their old school. The transition would be effortless.

Parents would also reap the benefits of a national curriculum. Gone are the days of parents badgering the school system over and over to find out what their children are actually learning. With a national curriculum, parents are comforted by the fact that children all over are learning the same material as their child. A national curriculum would also be very easy to publicize, so parents could access the exact curriculum that their child is being taught in school.

While a national curriculum would be great, it is important to take in to consideration that not all students learn in the same ways or at the same pace that other children do. When creating a national curriculum, it is imparative to take this detail into account and design a curriculum that works for everyone.

Overall, the benefits of creating a national curriculum far outweigh the negatives. Students would all be on the same level, so that no student would have an advantage over another. Teachers would have an easier time moving to different schools, and their prep time would be all but eliminated. Parents would have access to the curriculum their child is learning and know that every other child is learning the exact same thing. All in all, a national curriculum is the best solution to the issue at hand.
