Number Properties book, page 99, question 3

The explanation for this question does not make sense to me. Seems like something is missing from the question. How is it possible to solve for y in this equation? The best you can do is solve for y in terms of x, as in y=x^5-4. But we have no value for x, so how can we say that y=1? If x is 10, y=9,996.

Edit: I guess it was a misprint in the book.
