ManGre FDP medium practice ? #19

by jeremyluzier Mon Jan 30, 2012 1:44 pm

simplify this fraction:

5/3 - 1/6
------------------
0.3 to the 2nd power/0.2

I have the ebook so I'm not sure what page in the paper book this question is on... but it's medium practice question #19.

The explanation of the lower portion of the fraction shows 0.3 to the 2nd equaling .09... got it. But then it shows the denominator of 0.2 equaling 0.02 and then 0.09/0.02 equaling 9/2.

Is this an error? Why does 0.2 equal 0.02? The exponent is only applied to the 0.3 giving 0.09. But if it was applied to the denominator of 0.2 it would be 0.04 not 0.02. Is this an error or am I missing something?

CLIFF NOTES: I got the answer 10/3 but the book answer is 1/3 (because 0.3 squared /0.2 = 0.09 / 0.02 = 9/2). I'm either missing something or this is an error. How does 0.2 become 0.02?

Hi Jeremy,

These are indeed typos. These should read 0.3^2/0.2 = 0.09/0.2 = 9/20 and (3/2)/(9/20) = 10/3.

We have an errata page listing all of the known errors here:

Sorry for any confusion! Thanks for clarifying.
