i can not find any clue, but i assume if any sentence start

by hasibul.alam Fri Feb 05, 2016 10:47 am

jansen`s writing strikes many as ------(1) : for one who is capable of enduing even the most recondite topics with a(n) (2)-------- tone, his prose becomes (3)------ in the onformal correspondence he had with his contemporaries

blank (1)
a.pedantic
b.forbidding
c. paradoxical
blank 2
e.acerbic
f. cautious
g. brezzy

blank 3
i.curiously stilted
j. fully realized
k. somewhat unguarded

ans- c, g, i

i can not find any clue, but i assume if any sentence start with ``for` it works like despite, then 2nd blank stands acerbic for me because the topic is recondite and so third blank is realized but ans is totally diferent . moreover, enduing means investing but in this context how come investing???? plz explain someone

Hasibul,

Two quick things first:

1) Please, when you post these, type them up correctly, without grammatical errors. It isn't fair to future users of this forum to have to try and translate from your post to the correct sentence as written, nor is it fair to ask me to go back into your original post to fix the problems.

2) Please title your posts with the first few words of the sentence itself, so other people can actually reference the information.

Now, on to your questions:

1) For does not mean "despite." This usage is listed as the 9th usage of "for" in my dictionary: "in relation to the expected norm of (something)." So it is similar to "despite" in setting up a contradiction. As another example: For someone who claims to be full of energy, you sure do sleep a lot.

2) Acerbic and recondite have no connection in terms of meaning. The contradiction (which we're expecting, as I mentioned) is between breezy and stilted. This guy is breezy in his difficult work, but stilted in his personal life. This is a paradox, giving us the first blank.
