gre math

by jalshri Fri Aug 31, 2012 1:15 am

Jack is putting together gift boxes at a rate of 3 per hour in the first hour. Then Jill comes over and yells,"work faster!" Jack, now nervous ,works at the rate of only 2 gift boxes per hour for the next 2 hours.Then Alex comes to Jack and whispers,"The steadiest hand is capable of the divine." Jack,calmer,then puts together 5 gift boxes in the fourth hour. What is the average rate at which Jack puts together gift boxes over the entire period?
Ans: 3 boxes per hour

Hi Jalshri,

To solve Rate problems I always relied on Manhattan's RTW Chart technique and again it worked for me.
Please check that one.

Don't just add all the work rates and calc the avaerage.

find overall work that he has done and find overall time that he has spent.

Total time - 4 hrs
Total Boxes that he kept - 12

RT=D
R= D/T
R= 12/4
R=3

Hope that helps!

Cheers,
Naresh

Great work you guys! Also, just a quick note on forum usage. Please post questions only in one category, rather than in multiple categories. Fear not, we will always get to it!
