Functions and Radical Roots

by baily106 Wed Aug 27, 2014 8:59 am

I cam across this question online.

In the function below, for what values of x is g(x) a real number?
g(x) = (2x-3)^1/4 +1

A) x is greater than or equal to zero
B) x is greater than or equal to 1/2
C) x is greater than or equal to 3/2
D) x is greater than or equal to 2
E) x is greater than or equal to 3

Thanks.

Hey Baily,

Wow. I've never seen a real question that involves the term "Real number," so that makes me nervous. All they're really asking here is when is (2x-3) ≥ 0 (because the 4th root of a negative is imaginary).

2x - 3 ≥ 0

2x ≥ 3

x ≥ 1.5
