Correct method?

by p_gorsky Thu Sep 26, 2013 12:10 pm

If the area of equilateral triangle ABC is 4 times that of equilateral triangle PQR, then each side of ABC is how many times the corresponding side of PQR?

I got the correct answer but I used a different method.
I reasoned that id the area is 4 times that of the smaller triangle then 4(.5bxh) is 2 times bxh.
Is this correct?

Thanks,
Pam

Hey Pam,

Yep! That's a very elegant way to do it.

For those who don't understand:

A = 1/2bh

So if you want 4A, you need twice the base and the height:

4A = 1/2 * 2b * 2h

Well done!
