Can't seem to increase quant score

by kaushik.visvanathan Mon May 30, 2016 4:09 pm

I've been studying for the GRE for the past month or so and I can't seem to increase my quant score above the 80th percentile. Some of the programs I want to apply to are very competitive and I'm looking to reach the 90th percentile at least. I've taken 4-5 practice tests and worked through the manhattan prep book series but I'm not sure what else to do to increase my score. Is further improvement possible? If so, what do I need to do to make it happen?

Time for class or private tutoring. I'm really not just trying to upsell you. You can go buy them from some other company. But if you've studied alone for a long time and have stopped seeing improvement, you need to get some face-to-face with an actual person. I'd recommend private tutoring.

Good luck!

P.S. It almost means that some aspect of your studying is incorrect. Improvement, particularly in math, is fairly linear with time spent. The most likely problem (and one that we see a lot in students who study alone) is that you aren't changing your techniques. You've convinced yourself that your pre-existing techniques ought to be good enough, so you aren't doing some of the higher level stuff (backsolving from answer choices, setting values when there are variables in the answer choices, etc.) that you need to do to do really well on the test.
