Arithmetic 5lbs Q)34

by xerocoool Mon Aug 25, 2014 10:31 pm

It takes 4 (2/3) feet of wood to make a frame for a lithograph. If wood is sold at $5 a yard and only by the yard and a collector needs to make 4 frames, how much will the wood cost [ 1 yard = 3 feet ]

A) $23.33
B) $25
C) $ 33.33
D) $ 35
E) $ 100

On solving,

1) converting 4 (2/3) feet to yards gives : 14/9 yards (5.22)
Wood required to make 1 frame is 5.22
2) 4 frames = 4 x 5.22 = 6.222 yards
3) Wood is sold at $5 per 1 yard = 6.22 * 5 = 31.1 or 6 * 5 = approx 30

The answer given in the book is (D), the author has considered the number of whole yards as 7 and not 6.

In such cases do we need to follow the rounding principle or since the yard of wood being an physical quantity we just consider the the next integer value (as the value is greater than 6).

Thanks

Hi,

4 frames = 6.22 yards

In this case you can't round down, because if you do, you'll not have sufficient wood to complete the frames. So, you need to consider the higher integer.
