hey,
I have my GRE on the 13th of this month, i would appreciate if you could evaluate this essay topic for me.
This one was on the first powerprep test:
A nation should require all of its students to study the same national curriculum untill they enter college.
The strength of a country lies in the education of its population. The greater the extent of education both basic and advanced is essential in the growth and developement of the individual as well as the nation asa whole. While people may have different preferences regarding the subjects that may interest them, it is necessary to also have a curriculum wherein the overall development of an individual takes place.
One may say that, a person must be free to select the subjects of his/her choice, this selection option comes at a much later stage. Primarily to bolster this ability to select an aptitude of a persons choice, one has to be educated to a basic level. This is where the implementation of a unified curriculum for basic/ pre-college education comes into the picture.
If the bodies governing education enfranchise the authority to the individual states, to select their own curriculum, they must review it. The states might include local history and would emphasize on events of the past. This would enable creation of stereotypes in the minds of the students. Thus a wrongdoing of the past by certain section of society would envenom the present generations. One more problem with a state wise or ununified national curriculum would be, the ability of the curriculum in question, to bolster the overall developement of an individual. These would be some of the issues that the national governing body would face, not to forget the retaliation, if acceptance of a paticular curriculum was rejected by the national body.
It can be said that, the governing bodies must provide a balanced approach wherein the cultures and traditions of all the parts of a nation are kept into mind and it aids the developement of an individual in all aspects viz. educational, ethical, cultural etc. A standard curriculum would provide an unbiased, rational opinion on issues. Also when students do reach the college level, they are on par with each others knowledge, since they have been taught the same curricula. This will thus prevent a superiority or inferiority bias. A balanced, unbiased curriculum nationwide would be ideal.
