Analyse an argument essay

by Adityaagupta24 Tue Aug 06, 2013 6:15 am

Hey,

I've got my GRE coming up next week, would appreciate if you could rate me on this one (from powerprep test 1)

The following is a memorandum from the business manager of a television station

"Over the past year, our late-night news program has devoted increased time to national news and less time to weather and local news. During this time period, most of the complaints received from viewers were concerned with our station's coverage of weather and local news. In addition, local businesses that used to advertise during our late-night news programs have cancelled their advertising contracts with us. Therefore, in order to attract more viewers to the program and to avoid losing any further advertising revenues, we should restore to weather and local news to its former level."

Write a response in which you can discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the arguement

In the statment made by the manager of the television station in discussion, is ambiguous and he has failed to question the analysis of the performace of his late-night news program throughly before coming to a conclusion of making the changes as mentioned in the memorandum.

The business manager has failed to mention the exact time of the late night slot in question, the interpretetions of 'late' can be various. The manager also does not explicitly mention reason for the local business' discontinuing their advertising contract, the reason for the termination of their contract might be because they were not able to afford the high costs of adversiting any more, or maybe they were not doing well enough and were about to close down. The local business owners might have taken their advertising to a competitor news channel owing to a cheaper deal. Hence, if the channel were to offer a cheaper deal or higher frequency of ads, the business owners might be in agreement.

The manager also fails to cite the TRP's of the contemporary news channels which do focus greatly on the local news and weather reports. Having an account of their viewership rating would enable the decision-makers take a steps in those lines. The statistics and figures of the news channels which air at the same 'late night' slot would also be of great help in judging the performance of the tv station in question.

The viewership during the daytime has not been mentioned, thus it might be true that the news channel is not just suffering with a late night slot, but a more severe problem related to decline in the overall viewership. In that case, would require drastic steps to be taken.

Thus, on the basis on which the manager wants to make changes to the news channels content are not well rooted and do require further profound study and analysis.
