Alebra study guide 1 pg.146 easy problem set question 10

I need help on question 10:

At a gaduation giests sit in rows such that there are p people in the first row, p+1 in the second, p+2 in the third and so on. how many peple sit in row n than in the seond row?

SO i did read the explaination and i think i understand but can you maybe explain it further? I get that the pattern follows p+(n-1)

so it says it will be n-2 people seated in row n than in row 2. If it asked how many more people were seated in row n than in row 1 would it be n-1? and if it asked about row n compared to row 3, would it be n-3?

Hey Indiangal,

In the future, please check your posts for spelling errors, because they often compromise meaning and can cause problems. In this case, you left out words that are necessary to understanding the question. I'll rewrite it correctly here:

At a graduation, guests sit in rows such that there are p people in the first row, p+1 in the second, p+2 in the third and so on. How many more people sit in row n than in the second row?

I would just logic this out. Let's say the first row has 1 person in it:

Row 1: 1
Row 2: 2
Row 3: 3
Row 4: 4
Row 5: 5
Row 6: 6
etc.

Now let's check some Ns.

If n = 4, Row 4 has 2 people more than row 2.
If n = 5, Row 5 has 3 more people than row 2
If n = 6, Row 6 has 4 more people than row 2

In every case, the difference is simply n - 2.

Let's check your next question, about row 1

If n = 4, Row 4 has 3 more people than row 1
If n = 5, Row 5 has 4 more people than row 1
If n = 6, Row 6 has 5 more people than row 1

In every case, the difference is n - 1.
