About the possible instructions -given by ETS..

by robinphilip01 Sat Jan 03, 2015 3:52 am

Hi Tommy !!
See the two types of instructions for a prompt;

" 1) Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim.In developing and supporting your position, be sure to address the most compelling reason or examples that could be used to challenge your position.

2) Write a response in which your discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim AND the reason on which the claim is based. "

In the first instruction, it is asked for example, but in second, not asked for it,
and also, asked to reason on which the claim is based.
I suppose, same topic can be given to these two different instructions,as both are based on a claim. In this case, do we need to give
less importance for giving examples in the essay, for the second instruction type
?

Hey Robin,

Actually, there are more than two types of prompt. You can read more about this at the official GRE website: https://www.ets.org/gre/revised_general ... issue/pool

The short answer is that it's very important that you obey the tasks as they are set to you. In my opinion, most good essays would take on those tasks anyway, but occasionally they make require you to deviate from the structure/path you would chosen otherwise. Either way, it's more important that you get those tasks in there then that you get in some other random thing you wanted! : )
